Friendswood Texas

Friendswood Texas was discovered by Frank J. Brown and Thomas H. Lewis in the Spring of 1895.  Brown and Lewis were members of religious sect called Quakers or Friends.  On July 15, 1895, the name of the colony, Friendswood, was recorded in Galveston courthouse.  The first 50 years, there was 1 church, 1 school, a post office, grocery store and fig processing plants.  During the 1950's, the population was less than 1,000.  In the 1950's young families started moving to the area from nearby Houston, but the population really grew in the 1960's as the space program grew and many NASA employees decided to make this city their home.  Now, the population is approximately 36,000.  This city is a suburban community of fine homes, churches, businesses, schools and organizations.

The city lies in two counties--Northern Galveston and Southern Harris County, divided by Clear Creek.  Clear Creek offers direct water access to the Gulf of Mexico through Clear Lake and Galveston Bay.  This area encompasses 21 square miles and is over 70% developed.  This gives room for growth in the commercial, industrial, and residential sector.  The residents are only 30 minutes from the Houston Downtown area.  Houston offers Cultural, educational and recreational events, ballet, opera, theaters, orchestras, museums, zoos, major league sports of all kinds and so much more.  NASA and Space Center Houston are only 15 minutes away, the Kemah Boardwalk is approximately a 20 minute drive and Galveston Beaches are just 30 minutes away.  Galveston is a very historic town.  One can enjoy shopping on the Strand, or laying on the beach.  Galveston is also home to the Moody Gardens Resort.

A home buyer will find numerous community recreational opportunities here.  Residents can enjoy many parks.  Centennial Park is a community park that includes: 2 picnic pavilions, a 3/4 mile hiking/jogging trail, playground, concession, restrooms, 5 lighted soccer fields, 2 multipurpose fields, 2 lighted football fields, 8 total soccer fields and the Evelyn B. Newman Amphitheater.  The park is home to the 4th of July evening programs and fireworks show.  Over the years the program has attracted over 10,000 spectators.  The city hosts an annual Kidfish competition at the 3.5 acre retention pond.  Also, there are outdoor Basketball courts, Friendswood Sesquicentennial pool, sand volleyball, and tennis for community enjoyment.

The city recognizes that education is an important part of every successful community is very big on quality education.  The area lies within 2 premier school districts:  Clear Creek Independent School District and Friendswood Independent School District (FISD).  Both are rated among the best in Texas.  Clear Creek Independent School District's mission is "To develop students who will lead the way to the future by educating and equipping them with the skills necessary to excel in the 21st century".  FISD goal is "To take our efforts to a higher level and demonstrate to the nation just what is possible!".  There are several community colleges, as well as quality four year universities and upper level graduate schools in close proximity.
