Manvel Texas is located in Northern Brazoria County south of the city of Pearland and West Alvin.  Originally names Pomona.  The city's namesake, Mr. Manvel was once president of the Atchinson, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.  The first group of sellers in the region, the family of W. R. Booth settled on Chocolate Bayou in July 1857.  In 1877 the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway built through the area on crossing, and business began to be established there.  In 1892 the community had a post office and by 1895 a population of 350.  Snow in 1895, a tornado in 1899, and a storm in 1900 destroyed local orchards and crops.  During the early and middle 1900's the town stayed roughly the same in size and population.  On September 8, 1931, the Texas Oil Company struck oil on property in Manvel and it became a rich oil-producing community.  In 1936 local rice production began.  The census of 2000 shows that Manvel had a population of 3,046.

Manvel is convenient to several employment centers.  The Texas Center and Downtown Houston are just 20 miles north on State Highway 288 and Galveston is only 37 miles east on Highway 6.  Sugarland and Freeport are also easy commutes.

Students in the city attend schools that are part of the Alvin ISD.  Alvin ISD is an accredited district with a recognized rating from the Texas Education Agency.  The city is served by the Alvin Community College system ans is also within commuting distance of several larger colleges including University of Houston, Rice University, Texas A&M Galveston, University of St. Thomas, Houston Community College, Texas Southern University, Baylor College of Medicine, University of Texas Medical Branch and Houston Baptist University.
