Jessica Lautz, Deputy Chief Economist at NAR, attests to the formidable challenges facing first-time homebuyers of color, stating, “It’s an incredibly difficult market for all homebuyers right now, especially first-time homebuyers and especially first-time homebuyers of color.”

To alleviate some of these barriers, various down payment assistance programs have been established to support minority buyers in their pursuit of homeownership:

  • The 3By30 program provides invaluable resources for Black buyers, streamlining the process of securing a down payment.
  • Down Payment Resource highlights 42 U.S. homebuyer assistance programs across 14 states, catering to Native Americans and offering aid with down payments and other costs.
  • Fannie Mae extends down payment assistance to eligible first-time homebuyers residing in Latino communities.

While these programs offer essential assistance, it’s crucial to explore additional federal, state, and local options with the guidance of a real estate professional.
